| Biography:
Daniel Masi was born in Akron, Ohio and spent most of his childhood growing
up in Penfield, a suburb of Rochester, NY. After graduating from high
school, Daniel attended the University of Maryland Baltimore County, where
he studied Imaging and Digital Art.
During his studies at UMBC, Daniel concentrated his efforts on interactive
multimedia. He utilized the mediums' capability of responding to user
input via the computer mouse and the ability to produce random numbers
and compute and
respond to preconceived algorithmic computations. For his senior project,
Daniel used Macromedia Director to create "Being-New Being"
which combined randomly generated poetry and music.
After graduating, Daniel accepted a job with Weber Shandwick International,
public relations firm as an Interactive/Graphic Designer. After a year
of working with Weber Shandwick, Daniel was hired as an Interactive Art
Director for zerotoeighty.com.
In 2001, Daniel left his job to do Americorps through the University
of Oregon's Community and Regional Planning Master's Program. His work
in city planning was fueled by his interest in sustainability and education.
He explored projects in city planning that included historical redevelopment/restoration,
creating a city arts plan, and promoting alternative modes of transportation.
During this time he became active in local and national politics, participating
and organizing rallies against Wal-Mart and the war in Iraq. Also at this
time he became a local access television producer and worked with filmmakers,
activists, and community facilitators to produce a video on Democracy
and Wisdom Councils.
Continuing to explore his interest in sustainability and education, Daniel
wanted to explore and meet people, farmers (both organic and industrial)
and other activists. He did this by riding his bicycle across the continental
United States with Global Exchange from San Francisco to Bloomington,
IN and with just a few friends the rest of the way to Washington DC.
Daniel is now living with his partner, Caitlin, in Charles Town, WV where
they started their residency as "WWOOFers". WWOOF stands for
Willing Worker On Organic Farms or World Wide Opportunities on Organic
Farms, and is an opportunity for people to travel inexpensively by trading
labor for room and board. Believing in this idea of collective effort
they continue to live in Charles Town where they work in exchange for
rent along with other tenets supporting a seminar and retreat business.
The collective effort allows for the preservation of important farm land
in a growing area of suburban sprawl development.
Presently, Daniel wears many different hats with his multiple part-time
jobs. He keeps busy staying on the the property of the seminar and retreat
business with cooking, cleaning and maintenance projects. Daniel is also
an art teacher to students in 1st grade through 8th grade at Morgan Academy.
He also teaches art one day a week after school at the Arts Centre in
Martinsburg. Lastly, but most importantly, Daniel continues to create
his own art work in his home studio.
